Thomas Harold Gilliam, 101, of Hagerstown passed into eternal life surrounded by his loving family on February 20, 2022.
Born on December 11, 1920, in Lynchburg, Virginia, he was the son of the late Herman Waverly and Gracie Edna (Mays) Gilliam.
Sgt. Gilliam was a Pearl Harbor survivor and proudly served his country for 58 months in the Pacific Theater in the 7th Air Force Medical Corps attached to the Signal Aircraft Warning Division at Fort Kamehameha, Hawaii. “Mr. Tom” wore his WWII Veteran hat wherever he went.
As a civilian he worked numerous jobs – Victor Products, M.P. Moler, Pangborn, Fairchild Industries (10 years), Lynmar TV, Natalie Florists, and Valley Flowers. He retired from Mack Trucks with 22 years of employment.
Tom was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 60 years. He was also a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, VFW of Greencastle, UAW Local 171, and the Potomac Highlands WWII Roundtable. He was the last surviving member of Post 42 WWII Last Man’s Club.
He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver of 74 years Helen Theresa (Lushbaugh) Gilliam. In addition to his wife he is survived by daughters Kristy Crites (Bob), Sherry Itnyre (Dave), and Nancy Gilliam; grandchildren David Osborne, Matthew Hullinger (Alyssa), Justin Itnyre, and Greg Itnyre; great grandchildren Sarah Osborne, Cole Itnyre, Reid Itnyre, Ruby Hullinger, and Nova Hullinger.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Waverly, Doris, Helen, Earl, Edith, Florence, Melvin, and Clarence, and great granddaughter Autumn Itnyre.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 11 AM at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Dionne Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, February 23 from 6-8 PM.
