Vivian Josephine Harbaugh, 97, of Hagerstown, MD, died November 20, 2020 at Longview Nursing Home in Manchester, MD.
Born July 13, 1923 at the family farm in Garfield, MD, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Forrest and Delva Mae Harne Lewis. She was the widow of Lester V. Harbaugh who died in 2000.
Vivian attended the Forest School and the Hagerstown Business College’s secretarial program. During WW II, Vivian traveled to California to work in an aircraft factory in support of the war effort. She worked as a secretary and performed some quality control activities. Following the war she returned to Maryland and worked as a beautician at Catherine’s Beauty Salon in Hagerstown.
Vivian was a long-term member of Christ’s Reformed Church in Hagerstown where she taught Sunday School for many decades and served on the Church Council. She volunteered as an office secretary at the church and at the Hagerstown Food Bank.
Vivian was preceded in death by four sisters; Irene Dean of Falling Waters WVA, Lottie Cauffman of Hagerstown, Pauline Swope of Waynesboro, PA and Ellen Smith of Nokomis, FL.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Jane Caudill of Asheboro, NC and her two brothers Jesse (Gene) Lewis of Hagerstown and Melvin Lewis of Smithsburg. She is also survived by a son, Lester Wayne Harbaugh and his wife, Linda of Reisterstown, MD, two grandchildren Kevin Harbaugh of Hampstead, MD and Kyle Harbaugh of Bel Air, MD and five great grandchildren.
A short service, followed by interment, will be held at the Rest Haven Funeral Home in Hagerstown, MD. Due to the ongoing Covid 19 crisis, the family is asking that only family members attend.
In lieu of flowers, Vivian had requested that donations be made to Christ’s Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
