William Donald Laing, 86, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Aug. 12, 1924, in Miami, Fla., he was the son of the late Edwin Gregor Laing Sr. and Jessie (Joss) Laing.
Mr. Laing received a BS degree in botany at the University of Miami.
He retired as a gardener with Darwin Botanical Gardens, Darwin, Australia.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radioman 3rd class. He also served in the U.S. Army.
He attended The Good Shepherd Ministries, Hagerstown.
His favorite hobby was tracing his family genealogy. He also enjoyed traveling the world.
He is survived by two nephews, Garry T. Laing and wife, Paulette, of Hagerstown, and Rawdon Kellogg and wife, Pamela, of Guntersville, Ala.; one niece, Bonnie Laing Schroeder of Hermosa Beach, Cailf.; two grand-nephews; and one great-grandnephew.
After establishing roots in Hagerstown, at the age of 83, he was loved by Garryâ??s wife, Paulette, and their huge extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Laing Kellogg; and two brothers, Charles Laing and Edwin Laing.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Steven McCullough officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
