William Mell Gales III

William Mell Gales III, 67, affectionately known as “Billy” of Hagerstown, Maryland entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Doey’s House in Hagerstown. He was the husband of nearly 20 years and companion of nearly 40 years to Dorothy Yvonne (McPherson) Gales. 

Born on December 11, 1955, in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late William Mell Gales Jr. and Evelyn (Edward) Gales. William had a passion for driving which inspired him to become an entrepreneur and then opening his own business, Atlas Limousine Company. He enjoyed cooking, singing, fishing, and camping. He also loved a game of cards, blackjack, poker, and phase 10. He was the family patriarch and entertainer who loved having cookouts and parties with his family and close friends. He also enjoyed settling down nest to his fireplace. 

In addition to his wife Dorothy, he is survived by his children, David Johnson, Wendy Gales, Shelley Wilson (Todd), Angela Anderson (Changa), William Gales IV, Hollie Griffith (Marcus), Blake Gales, Bryan Gales, and Troy Gales (Marquita); siblings, Diane Charles (Junious), Pamela Riley (Alphonso), Elvis Gales (Karla), and in-laws Christine Gales and Joseph Williams. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Gregory Gales, Sharon-Gales-Avery, Sunday Gales, and Sylvia Williams.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon-1pm on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742. A funeral service will be held at 1pm at the funeral home. Internment will follow within the cemetery.
